Keeping that fluffy white coat looking its best.
Bichons have a unique double coat โ a soft, dense undercoat and a coarser, curly outer coat. This combination creates that signature "powder puff" look but requires regular maintenance to prevent matting and keep them comfortable.
That adorable cotton-ball appearance doesn't happen by accident. Bichon Frises have continuously growing hair (not fur) that doesn't shed in the traditional sense. Instead, loose hair gets trapped in the coat, which leads to matting if not brushed out regularly.
Without proper grooming, Bichons can develop:
| Service | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Professional Grooming | Every 4-6 weeks |
| At-Home Brushing | Every 1-2 days |
| Face Wiping (tear stains) | Daily |
| Ear Cleaning | Weekly |
Bichons on a regular 4-week schedule are much easier (and faster) to groom than those who wait 8+ weeks. Regular appointments also mean a more comfortable experience for your dog.
The classic Bichon look โ rounded head, fluffy body, scissored to perfection. Beautiful but high-maintenance. Requires brushing every day and grooming every 3-4 weeks.
A popular, practical choice. Body trimmed to 1-2 inches with a rounded face. Still looks adorable but much easier to maintain between grooms. Learn more about our teddy bear cut.
Short all over (ยฝ to 1 inch). Perfect for active dogs, hot weather, or owners who prefer low maintenance. Still unmistakably a Bichon!
Those reddish-brown streaks under a Bichon's eyes are a common concern for owners โ and something we also address with Maltese, another white-coated breed. Tear staining happens when tears overflow onto the fur and oxidize, creating discoloration that's especially visible on white coats.
During grooming, we carefully clean the eye area and trim stained fur when possible. For best results, we recommend:
Use a slicker brush and work in sections, brushing all the way to the skin. Pay extra attention to behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar area โ these spots mat first. A metal comb helps check for tangles you might have missed.
Your Bichon gets my complete attention. No other dogs, no distractions, no waiting in a cage.
No kenneling before or after. Your dog arrives, gets groomed, and goes home happy.
I understand the Bichon coat and how to achieve that fluffy, rounded look they're known for.
Bichon Frises typically fall into our small dog category. Pricing depends on coat condition, style requested, and time between grooms.
Severely matted Bichons may require additional time and cost. Regular 4-6 week appointments keep pricing consistent and your dog comfortable.
