About the Cockapoo Coat

Cockapoos are one of the original "designer dogs" — a cross between Cocker Spaniels and Poodles that's been around since the 1960s. They're known for their friendly personalities and those adorable, often curly coats.

As a mixed breed, Cockapoo coats can vary quite a bit. Some take after the Poodle side with tight curls, others have the wavy Cocker Spaniel coat, and some fall somewhere in between.

Cockapoo Coat Types

Tight Curly

Poodle-like curls. Low shedding but mats easily. Needs daily brushing.

Loose Wavy

Soft waves. Most common type. Moderate maintenance.

Straight/Flat

The Cockapoo Matting Problem

Let me be real with you: Cockapoos are one of the most mat-prone breeds I groom. That beautiful wavy/curly coat tangles easily, and mats can form seemingly overnight.

Matting Hot Spots

Ears — Especially behind and underneath (from collar friction)
Armpits — Constant friction from walking

Between back legs — Friction + moisture

At-Home Care Tips

Brush DAILY — This is non-negotiable for Cockapoos. Use a slicker brush and metal comb.
Brush in sections — Part the coat and brush from skin outward, not just the surface
Use detangling spray — Makes brushing easier and reduces breakage
Check ears twice weekly — Cockapoos inherit the Cocker's tendency for ear infections
Wipe face after meals — Prevents beard matting and staining
Consider a harness — Collar friction causes major neck matting

What Happens If Matting Gets Bad?

If mats get too tight or cover too much of the body, humanely shaving the coat short may be the only option. This isn't punishment — it's kindness.
