Creative Pet Dye & Coloring
Safe, fun, and fabulous. Give your pup a look that turns heads at the dog park.
What Is Creative Pet Coloring?
Creative grooming adds color, flair, and personality to your dog's coat. Pink-tipped ears for a birthday, a splash of color on the tail, a Liberty Flames red-and-blue for game day, or a full creative makeover — it's a way to make your dog stand out without doing anything that's bad for them. I do creative dye work as an add-on to a regular groom, not as a standalone service, because the coat has to be clean and properly prepped for the color to take evenly.
It's completely safe when done right. I use only pet-specific, non-toxic dyes designed for animal fur — brands like OPAWZ, Top Performance Crazy Liberty, and Critter Color. No human hair dye. No food coloring (which fades muddy and irritates skin). No bleach. The dyes I use are semi-permanent: vivid for the first two to three weeks, then they soften and wash out gradually over 4-8 baths.
Colors I Work With
Pink, purple, blue, teal, orange, green, yellow, rainbow — almost any look is possible. Colors show brightest on white or cream coats (Bichons, Maltese, Westies, white doodles, Samoyed-mixes). Light tan and silver coats hold pastels well. Black and dark coats can't take dye directly without bleach (which I won't do); for those dogs I recommend feather extensions or color spray for a one-day event instead.
Creative Grooming Options
- Accent Color — A pop of color on ears, tail tip, paws, or mohawk. Cleanest entry point. $15-30 add-on depending on placement.
- Feather Extensions — Colorful synthetic feather clips that attach safely to fur with a small bead. Last 1-3 weeks and can be removed any time. No dye involved.
- Stencil Designs — Hearts, stars, paw prints, or custom shapes on the back or side. Best on solid-light coats.
- Full Creative Color — Multiple colors blended or zoned across the dog. Show-quality creative grooming. 2-3 hour appointment.
- Holiday & Event Themes — Seasonal colors (orange for fall, red-green for December), sports teams (Hokies, Cavaliers, Flames), birthdays, wedding photos.
How I Prep and Apply
Every color session starts with a full bath using a clarifying shampoo so there's no leftover oil or residue blocking the dye from absorbing. The coat is then dried completely — a wet coat won't hold color evenly. I apply the dye section by section with a brush or gloved hand, let it set for the manufacturer's recommended time (usually 15-30 minutes), then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. A final blow-out reveals the finished color. The whole add-on takes about 30-60 minutes on top of the standard groom for an accent, longer for full creative.
What Doesn't Get Dyed
I never apply color near eyes, mouth, ears (inside), or genitals. I won't dye dogs under one year old — their skin is too sensitive and the curiosity-licking risk is too high. I won't dye dogs with active skin issues, hot spots, or open wounds. And I won't bleach a coat to make a dark dog "pop" with bright color, no matter how much you offer to pay. Bleach belongs in laundry, not on dogs.
Safety Promise + What to Expect
Pet-specific, non-toxic dyes only. Colors fade naturally over 4-8 washes. No dye near eyes, mouth, or sensitive areas. Patch test on any dog new to color so we know they don't react. Your dog's comfort always comes first — if they're stressed by the application, we stop. Call (434) 227-3619 to schedule. Add-on pricing $15-30 for accents, $60-120 for full creative on top of a standard groom.
