Shih Tzu Grooming Guide

Everything you need to know about keeping your Shih Tzu clean, comfortable, and looking adorable.

The Shih Tzu Coat: Beautiful But Demanding

Shih Tzus were bred as companion dogs for Chinese royalty, and that luxurious double coat shows it. But what looks gorgeous in photos requires real commitment to maintain. As a small breed, the Shih Tzu thrives in our calm, one-on-one grooming environment.

The Shih Tzu coat is technically hair, not fur — similar to human hair, it grows continuously rather than shedding seasonally. This means regular haircuts are necessary, not optional.

Double Coat Basics

Shih Tzus have a soft, dense undercoat beneath a longer outer coat. Both layers need attention. When the undercoat isn't properly brushed out, it mats against the skin — even if the outer coat looks fine.

How Often Should a Shih Tzu Be Groomed?

Coat Length Professional Grooming Home Brushing
Short puppy cut (under 1") Every 6-8 weeks Weekly
Medium teddy bear (1-2") Every 4-6 weeks Every 2-3 days
Long show coat Every 2-4 weeks Daily

Popular Shih Tzu Haircuts

Puppy Cut

Same short length all over (typically ½" to 1"). Easy to maintain, keeps your Shih Tzu cool. The most popular choice.

Teddy Bear Cut

Rounded face with body at 1-2". Creates that adorable stuffed animal look. See our teddy bear cut page for details.

Top Knot Style

Body trimmed short while the head hair is left long enough for a ponytail or bow.

Lion Cut

Body clipped short with a mane left around the head and chest, plus a pom on the tail.

Shih Tzu Eye Care

Those big, beautiful Shih Tzu eyes come with maintenance requirements:

  • Tear staining — Reddish-brown streaks below the eyes. Daily wiping helps.
  • Eye irritation from hair — Hair can poke into the eyes if not properly trimmed.
  • Eye infections — Watch for excessive discharge, redness, or squinting.

Home Care Between Grooming Appointments

  • Brush regularly — Use a pin brush or slicker brush, followed by a comb.
  • Keep the face clean — Wipe around eyes daily.
  • Check ears weekly — Shih Tzus have floppy ears that trap moisture.
  • Watch for mats — Behind the ears, under the front legs, and around the collar. If mats have set in, our dematting service can help before they get worse.
