Goldendoodle Grooming Guide

Everything you need to know about keeping your doodle's coat healthy, mat-free, and looking adorable.

Why Goldendoodles Need Professional Grooming

Goldendoodles are wonderful dogs — friendly, smart, and often marketed as "low-shedding." But here's what many new doodle owners don't realize: that beautiful, fluffy coat requires serious maintenance.

Unlike single-coated breeds, Goldendoodles have a unique coat that's a mix of their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents. This means their fur can mat quickly, especially in areas with friction — behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, and around the legs. The same is true for their close cousins, Labradoodles.

Without regular professional grooming every 6-8 weeks, mats can become severe enough to require a complete shave-down. And trust me, nobody wants that surprise.

Understanding Goldendoodle Coat Types

Not all Goldendoodles have the same coat. The type your dog has determines how much brushing they need at home and what grooming style works best.

Curly Coat

Most Poodle-like. Tight curls, minimal shedding, but mats easily. Needs brushing every 1-2 days.

Wavy Coat

The most common type. Loose waves, moderate maintenance. Brush every 2-3 days.

Straight Coat

More Golden Retriever-like. Sheds more but mats less. Weekly brushing usually sufficient.

Venus's Tip

When brushing at home, always brush all the way down to the skin — not just the top layer. Surface brushing is the number one reason doodles come in matted even when owners brush regularly.

How Often Should You Groom a Goldendoodle?

The short answer: every 6-8 weeks for professional grooming, with regular brushing at home between appointments.

Task Frequency
Professional full groom Every 6-8 weeks
At-home brushing (curly coat) Every 1-2 days
At-home brushing (wavy coat) Every 2-3 days
Ear cleaning Weekly
Nail trim Every 3-4 weeks

Popular Goldendoodle Haircuts

When you bring your Goldendoodle in, here are the most requested styles:

  • Teddy Bear Cut — The most popular choice. Face is rounded, body is kept at 1-2 inches. Looks adorable and is manageable between grooms.
  • Puppy Cut — Same length all over (usually 1-2 inches). Simple, clean, easy to maintain.
  • Lamb Cut — Shorter body with fluffy legs. A nice balance of style and practicality.
  • Summer Cut — Shorter all over (½ inch or less) for hot weather. Less cute, but your dog will thank you in July.
  • Show/Long Cut — Longer coat maintained through frequent brushing and grooming. Beautiful but high-maintenance.

About Shave-Downs

If your Goldendoodle arrives severely matted, a short clip may be the only humane option. For mild to moderate cases, our professional dematting service can work through tangles without a full shave. It's always better to keep up with regular grooming than to deal with mats later.

What to Expect at a Goldendoodle Grooming Appointment

A full Goldendoodle groom at Fancy Pet Salon includes:

  • Thorough brushing and de-matting (if minor)
  • Bath with coat-appropriate shampoo
  • Blow dry and fluff
  • Haircut to your preferred style
  • Face, ears, and sanitary trim
  • Nail trim and filing
  • Ear cleaning
  • Teeth brushing (included in full groom)

Because Goldendoodles have thick coats, appointments typically take 2-3 hours. At Fancy Pet Salon, your dog stays with me the entire time — no cages, no waiting in kennels, just calm one-on-one attention.

Home Care Between Grooming Appointments

The work you do at home makes a huge difference in how your Goldendoodle's coat stays between professional grooms:

  • Use a slicker brush — This is the best tool for doodle coats. Brush in sections, lifting the coat and brushing from the skin outward.
  • Don't forget the trouble spots — Behind ears, under collar, armpits, groin, and between toes. These mat first.
  • Use a metal comb to check your work — If the comb glides through smoothly, you're done. If it catches, keep brushing.
  • Keep ears dry — Goldendoodles are prone to ear infections. Dry ears thoroughly after baths or swimming.
