Doodle & Poodle Grooming Specialists
The complete guide to doodle and poodle coat care — from curly coats to teddy bear cuts, mat prevention to grooming frequency.
Let's Be Honest About Doodle Coats
You didn't get a Goldendoodle because grooming would be easy. You got one because they're amazing dogs. But now you're dealing with mats that appear overnight, groomers who don't know the difference between a puppy cut and a teddy bear cut, and coat texture that changes as they grow.
Doodles and Poodles aren't just "curly dogs." Their double-layered, curl-prone coats need specific techniques — and a groomer who genuinely understands the difference between a Goldendoodle's wavy fleece and a Poodle's tight curls. That's where we come in.
Doodle & Poodle Breeds We Specialize In
We groom the full doodle and poodle family at Fancy Pet Salon:
- Goldendoodles — Golden Retriever × Poodle. The most popular doodle; wavy to curly coat.
- Labradoodles — Labrador × Poodle. Three coat types depending on generation.
- Cockapoos — Cocker Spaniel × Poodle. Silky-curly mix, prone to matting around ears.
- Bernedoodles — Bernese Mountain Dog × Poodle. Thicker, wavy coats; heavier shedding than other doodles.
- Aussiedoodles — Australian Shepherd × Poodle. High energy, often parti-colored, wavy coats.
- Standard & Miniature Poodles — The original curly-coated breed that started it all.
- All other doodle mixes — Sheepadoodles, Cavapoos, Schnoodles, and more. If it has Poodle in it, we know how to groom it.
Understanding Doodle Coat Types
Not all doodles have the same coat — even within the same breed. The coat type your dog inherits determines how much maintenance they need and what cuts work best.
Curly Coat
Most Poodle-like. Tight curls, minimal shedding, but mats quickly — especially behind the ears and under the legs. Needs brushing every 1-2 days.
Wavy / Fleece Coat
The most common doodle coat. Soft, loose waves, moderate maintenance. Brush every 2-3 days. Most forgiving coat type for longer styles.
Straight / Flat Coat
More retriever-like. Sheds more but mats less. Weekly brushing is usually enough. Common in F1 Goldendoodles and some Labradoodles.
Venus's Tip
When brushing at home, always brush all the way down to the skin — not just the surface. Surface brushing is the number one reason doodles come in matted even when owners swear they brush regularly. Use a slicker brush in sections, then run a metal comb through to confirm you've reached the skin.
How Often Should My Doodle Be Groomed?
The most common mistake doodle owners make is waiting too long between appointments. Here's a practical schedule:
| Task | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Professional full groom | Every 6-8 weeks |
| At-home brushing (curly coat) | Every 1-2 days |
| At-home brushing (wavy coat) | Every 2-3 days |
| At-home brushing (straight coat) | Weekly |
| Ear cleaning | Weekly — doodles are prone to ear infections |
| Nail trim | Every 3-4 weeks |
Go longer than 8-10 weeks and you risk mats severe enough to require a shorter cut than you wanted. If you brush consistently at home, some dogs can stretch to 10 weeks — but 6-8 is the sweet spot for keeping the coat in the style you love.
Popular Doodle & Poodle Haircuts
Here are the most requested cuts we do at Fancy Pet Salon:
- Teddy Bear Cut — The most popular choice for doodles. Face is rounded and fluffy, body kept at 1-2 inches. Adorable and manageable between grooms.
- Puppy Cut — Same length all over (usually 1-2 inches). Simple, clean, easy to maintain. Great for active dogs or first grooms.
- Lamb Cut — Shorter body with fluffy legs. A nice balance of style and practicality, especially for Poodles.
- Summer Cut — Shorter all over (½ inch or less) for hot weather. Practical for Virginia summers.
- Show / Long Cut — Longer coat maintained through frequent brushing and regular grooming visits. Beautiful but high-maintenance.
- Continental / Poodle Clip — Traditional Poodle style with shaved hindquarters and pom-poms. Ask us if this is right for your dog.
About Shave-Downs
If your doodle arrives severely matted, a short clip may be the only humane option — trying to brush out a dense mat causes pain and stress. For mild to moderate matting, our professional dematting service can work through tangles without a full shave. It's always easier (and cheaper) to prevent mats than to deal with them after. When in doubt, come in sooner.
What Your Doodle Gets at Every Appointment
A full doodle or poodle groom at Fancy Pet Salon includes:
- Thorough brushing and de-matting (if minor)
- Bath with coat-appropriate shampoo and conditioner
- Hand blow-dry and fluff — no cage drying, ever
- Haircut to your preferred style
- Face, ears, and sanitary trim
- Nail trim and filing
- Ear cleaning (doodles are especially prone to ear issues)
- Teeth brushing (included in full groom)
- Coat consultation — honest advice about what's realistic for your dog's coat type
Doodle appointments typically take 2-3 hours due to coat thickness. Your dog stays with me the entire time — no cages, no waiting in kennels between steps, just calm one-on-one attention from start to finish.
Home Care Between Grooms
What you do between appointments makes a big difference in your doodle's coat health and how long you can keep the style you love:
- Use a slicker brush — Work in sections, lifting the coat and brushing from the skin outward. This is the most effective tool for curly and wavy coats.
- Check the trouble spots first — Behind the ears, under the collar, armpits, groin, and between the toes. These areas mat before anywhere else.
- Finish with a metal comb — If the comb glides through to the skin without catching, you're done. If it snags, keep brushing that section.
- Keep ears dry — After baths or swimming, dry ears thoroughly. Moisture trapped in the ear canal causes infections, which doodles are genetically prone to.
- Don't bathe too often — Over-bathing strips the coat's natural oils and can actually make it mat faster. Every 4-6 weeks at home, with professional baths at every groom.
