About the Pomeranian Coat

Pomeranians are known for their magnificent double coat โ€” a fluffy, poofy look that makes them look like little lions or teddy bears. As one of our most popular small breeds, the Pom's fluff isn't just for show; it's a dense undercoat topped with longer guard hairs that served their ancestors well in cold climates.

Poms come in more colors than almost any other breed โ€” orange, black, white, cream, blue, sable, and many more!

Key Coat Characteristics

  • Type: Double coat โ€” dense undercoat + longer outer coat
  • Texture: Soft undercoat, harsher textured guard hairs
  • Shedding: HEAVY โ€” especially during seasonal "blowing coat"
  • Colors: Orange, cream, black, white, sable, blue, and more

โš ๏ธ Important: Never Shave a Pomeranian

I get asked about shaving Poms all the time, especially in summer. Here's why you should never do it:

  • The double coat actually insulates against heat AND cold
  • Shaving can cause permanent coat damage โ€” it may never grow back correctly
  • Exposes skin to sunburn and skin cancer
  • Can lead to a condition called "post-clipping alopecia"

If your Pom seems hot, keep them in air conditioning, provide plenty of water, and keep up with regular brushing to remove the insulating undercoat.

Recommended Pomeranian Styles

Natural/Show Trim

Light tidying that maintains the natural Pom shape. Feet, sanitary area, and edges cleaned up while preserving the breed's signature look.

Best for: Preserving the classic Pom appearance

Teddy Bear Trim

Coat trimmed shorter (not shaved!) with a rounded face. Creates an adorable, puppy-like appearance while keeping the coat healthy.

Best for: Owners who want easier maintenance

Lion Cut

Mane left full around the head and chest, body trimmed shorter. Dramatic look that some Pom owners love.

Caution: Body hair may not regrow properly

Puppy Cut

Even length all over (usually 1-2 inches). Lower maintenance while still keeping adequate coat protection.

Note: Coat texture may change with repeated cuts

Managing Pomeranian Shedding

Let's be honest โ€” Poms shed. A LOT. Here's how to manage it:

  • Brush 3-4 times per week minimum โ€” More during shedding season
  • Use the right tools โ€” Slicker brush, undercoat rake, and a comb
  • Regular deshedding treatments โ€” Professional blowouts remove tons of loose fur
  • Never skip baths โ€” Clean coat sheds less than dirty coat
  • Consider the "big shed" โ€” Poms "blow coat" 1-2 times per year; during this time, daily brushing helps

Pomeranian "Ugly Phase"

Between 4-10 months of age, Pom puppies go through a "puppy uglies" phase where they shed their puppy coat and look patchy and scraggly. This is completely normal! The adult coat will come in beautifully โ€” be patient and keep brushing.

At-Home Care Tips

  • Brush thoroughly 3-4x weekly โ€” Get all the way down to the skin
  • Pay attention to friction areas โ€” Behind ears, under collar, armpits
  • Keep ears clean โ€” Check weekly for debris and wax buildup
  • Trim nails regularly โ€” Small dogs need frequent nail care
  • Watch for hot spots โ€” Dense coat can hide skin irritation

Professional Grooming Schedule

Pomeranians do well with professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. During heavy shedding seasons (spring and fall), you might want to come in more frequently for deshedding treatments. Visit our pricing page for current rates.

A professional groom includes thorough brushing, deshedding, bath, blow-dry (which removes tons of loose undercoat), and trimming to keep that beautiful Pom shape.
