I was born and raised in Colombia, in the beautiful Eje Cafetero — the Coffee Region. It's a place of rolling green hills, perfect coffee, and incredibly warm people. But like many places in Latin America, it's also a place where street dogs are a daily reality.
Growing up, I saw them everywhere. Some were friendly neighborhood dogs that everyone fed but nobody "owned." Others were clearly struggling — thin, injured, scared. It shaped how I see animals and why I do what I do today.
The numbers are staggering. Colombia has an estimated 4 million street dogs. Across Latin America, the situation is even larger — Mexico has around 16 million, Peru has 6 million. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates over 200 million stray dogs roaming the streets.
In cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and Cartagena, hundreds of thousands of dogs live on the streets. Some were abandoned by owners who couldn't afford to keep them. Others were born on the streets, never knowing a home.
The reasons are complicated:
Near our family's farm in the Coffee Region, there's an organization doing incredible work. Refugio Huellas de Amor ("Love Footprints Shelter") in Pereira has become a sanctuary for the forgotten.

What makes Huellas de Amor special is their focus on the cases everyone else has given up on. Old dogs. Dogs with cancer. Dogs with disabilities. Dogs that other shelters say are "unadoptable." They believe every animal deserves dignity, comfort, and love — even if they never find a forever home.
"We know we cannot save all the animals in the world, but we can change the world for each animal we rescue. When there's a will, there's always a way!"
— Manuela Rodríguez, Founder
The shelter runs entirely on donations and volunteer work. They accept visitors on Sundays, and they've built a community of supporters who sponsor individual animals, donate supplies, and help spread the word.
The solutions are straightforward, even if implementing them is hard:
If you'd like to help this incredible organization:
Every dog I groom here in Virginia matters to me. But when I think about where I came from, I'm reminded that so many dogs around the world never get the chance to be pampered, loved, or even fed regularly.
The work that organizations like Huellas de Amor do inspires me. They're proof that compassion can change lives — one animal at a time.
If you've ever loved a dog, consider supporting rescue organizations — whether local or international. The dogs can't speak for themselves, but people like Manuela and her team speak for them every single day.
