When choosing a groomer for your senior dog, look for someone who offers:

• Shorter appointments — Break the groom into multiple sessions if needed
• Padded surfaces — Easier on arthritic joints
• No cage waiting — Standing in a crate is hard on old joints
• Warm environment — Seniors chill easily when wet
• Gentle handling — No rushing, no forcing positions
• Flexibility — Willing to modify the groom based on how the dog is feeling that day

When Grooming Becomes Too Stressful

Sometimes, very old or ill dogs reach a point where traditional grooming is too much. In these cases:

• Focus only on essentials (nails, sanitary trim, spot cleaning)
• Skip the full bath — waterless shampoo or wipes can help
• Do very short sessions (even 10-15 minutes)
• Consider in-home grooming to avoid travel stress

Quality of life always comes first. A slightly scruffy but happy senior is better than a perfectly groomed but traumatized one.
